John's first marriage appears to be to Maria Clarke in 1852 in New York. There is also a possibility they re-married in Victoria in 1866.

In J.N.L. Ansted's marriage to Ellen Burgis - M/C No. 133 - it mentions he had been a widower since 1877, and had 4 children by former marriage (all dead).

His 1 st wife, Maria, died 14 Jul 1877 age 52 years - according to her Death Certif. N0. 9574 - however, only one son, John Charles, was listed (dead).

(Ellen BURGIS was born on 10 Aug 1853 in 11 Kennington Place, Surry, Eng, died on 12 Oct 1925 in 16 Crotonhurst Ave, Caufield, Vic and was buried on 13 Oct 1925 in Melbourne Cemetry Comp. N Grave No 278, CofE.)

John next married Maria Attenborough CLARKE in 1852 in New York, USA. (Maria Attenborough CLARKE was born in 1825 in England, died on 14 Jul 1877 in South Yarra, Vic and was buried on 17 Jul 1877 in Melbourne Cemetery, Vic.)
