William CALWAY
General Notes: Family history handed down by Alan James Calway was that William changed his name to William Jones when he was a convict to avoid family embarisment but changed back to William Calway when he was a free man. He was a short man of 5 ft 2 inches and there is only one photo of him as he never liked getting his photo taken. His wife organised a photographer to take one in the street unknown to him. He spent some time in the goldfields and saved up a bag of soverigns with which he offered to pay for a trip back to England for his wife. It was hidden under the front step. William secretative about his past and England and did not want to go back. William married Amy (Elizabeth) HAWKINS, daughter of Samuel HAWKINS and Amy Elizabeth WEST, on 12 May 1859 in Hobart, Tasmania. (Amy (Elizabeth) HAWKINS was born on 4 Jun 1837 in Sunbury on Thames, Middlesex, England, christened on 4 Jun 1837 in Sunbury, Middlesex, England and died on 30 Sep 1895 in Hobart, Tasmania.) |
