William SMITH
General Notes:
It was not my privilege to know Mr. William Smith, the father of- this family, but I have learned that he was a good man, a good husband and father, and faithful in what ever he had to do. For some years, prior to his passing away, he was the Permanent Way Inspector of the Victorian Railways with head quarters at Ararat, where the family resided, at the time of his death in 1881, soon after this happening the Mother and family came to Williamstown and the home has been here ever since. The Father, William Smith and the Mother, Anne Smith whose maiden name was Wright were married in Southampton and came to Australia in the 'Poiteres' coming through the Port Phillip Heads on 4th January 1854. Of the Father's family, only one came to Australia, he was James, but returned early to England.
