Jessie Elizabeth O'BRIEN

  General Notes:

She was a business woman with a good personality. Her brother had a hotel in Hobart Tas.
She went by the name of Elizabeth Jessie O'Brien when she married but later recorded Jessie Elizabeth O'Brien and Jessie O'Brien as her name when the children were born.

They lived in a large two story house, were well off and Jessie was reported to be sturn. The grandchildren felt it was a matter of speak when spoken to. Jessie Holmes (nee O'Brien) later went to live with Edwin and Eunis and Kenneth had fond memories of his grandmother and she often gave him a penny.

Jessie Elizabeth Holmes' head stone indicates she died on 28 Feb 1940 but the burial date was 2 Mar 1941 on record of Entry 1B 37426 at the Cornelian Bay. She was 78 years old and her last residence was Royal Hobart Hospital. Her next of kin was James F. Holmes. Her head stone bore the inscription "1 patient sufferer at rest". The Grave is in the Church of England Section FF No.11. Her will in 1941 Reference AD960/1/65 Page 662 Will No 24197 is listed in the Archives of Tasmania. In the index references with an AD960 prefix refer to wills. This was written on 13 Feb 1938 after James death and was filed on 13 March 1941. In it she left everything to George Hunter Holmes and Eunice Sybil Dyer equally.

Jessie married James Fredrick (Fredrick) HOLMES on 2 Mar 1885 in Hobart, Tasmania. (James Fredrick (Fredrick) HOLMES was born in Apr 1853, died on 26 Sep 1935 in North Hobart, Tas and was buried on 27 Sep 1935 in Cornelian Bay Cemetery, Hobart, Tas.)
