Had nine brothers and sisters. His mother Matilda Emma Francis had died in England at the age of 37 years. In 1890 their father at the age of 43 brought the family to Australia. Ernest was in his mid -teens when his father died and struggled to find and keep employment. He had at various times small poultry farms and a carrier business.
Ernest married Marion BINNIE, daughter of William BINNIE and Mary ALLAN, in 1903 in Winston, Vic. (Marion BINNIE was born in 1875 in Winston, Vic and died in 1954.)
